Love their food. Been going to this restaurant since I moved here in the 1980s. Always friendly employees & great food, lots of it. The egg rolls are delicious! Just decided I'm getting Chinese tonight!

Great Chinese food that's tasty and well priced. Fast too! This has become our go-to for beef/broccoli and pot stickers.

I have eaten at South China at least once per week since I moved to Kalanazoo in 1999. The food is always prepared well. The service has always been top notch. The ambiance is especially good for a small family owned resturant.

My mother use to eat there almost every day in the 1970s and 1980s. The food has always been good and the chicken noodle soup is a cure all for any sickness, I swear!

South China is a local place on Riverview. I had never been there and didn't know what to expect. It was packed when we got there and a line for take out was out the door, which is a good sign. The line moved quickly and the staff is very friendly. The food was absolutely excellent. My wife and I love some good Chinese takeout. It was authentic and it's local and family owned. What more could you ask for? Did I mention the very reasonable prices? The inside could use a coat of paint but honestly it was a great place to eat or get takeout from. Make sure to order ahead if it's takeout! :-)

This is my first time and experience here, and I am happy to say that this review will be full of pros, and no cons at all ! I liked everything about this restaurant, I was so happy with the experience, here's why : - Delicious food with multiple wonderful choices and large quantities that you leave with plenty of leftovers. - Affordable great prices for everyone. - Fast service and great friendly staff, specially the lady at the counter she was super nice and expert. - The restaurant is so clean and cozy. When I ate there, I felt like I was in a whole different city. Overall, this is so far the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to in Kalamazoo !

I am a fan of small independently owned food spots, especially the Asian variety. Somehow this spot escaped my radar for quite a long time. I finally became aware of it when my co-worker brought in some take out from there and was bragging how good it was. SO of course I HAD to check it out! Fast forward a couple months later. South China has become my default go to for Chinese take out. I haven't dined in yet so this review is strictly about the take out. First of all the staff is super friendly. All smiles. And they remember you, and conversations you've had with them. That shows they pay attention to their customers. The interior is pleasant but nothing fancy. Simple booths and tables. Clean but simple. Some vague Asian inspired decor on the walls. Take out is pretty straight forward. Call ahead or order at the counter. I never call ahead and still have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my order. And they tend to do a pretty steady take out business, volume-wise. And for what you came to hear.... the food is EXCELLENT! I wont say it's the best I've ever had, but it is delicious. And even more important, it's CONSISTENT! I have been eating there at least once a week for the last 2 months or so and have YET to be disappointed. Did I mention the egg rolls? The egg rolls, these are the BEST IN THE KALAMAZOO/PORTAGE area. I know that's a huge claim to make but I stand by it. I've gone and just grabbed 3 egg rolls with a side of sweet & sour sauce. They are that good. Get an egg roll. Get two. South China is a great neighborhood food spot with friendly people, great service, and delicious food! You can't go wrong here.

South China

Nestled along 811 Riverview Dr, Kalamazoo, MI 49048, South China has become a go-to spot for those craving flavorful Chinese-American comfort food. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this cozy diner-style restaurant delivers consistently satisfying meals in a relaxed, no-fuss setting.

A local gem in Kalamazoo serving authentic Chinese-American flavors

When someone in Kalamazoo mentions a craving for crispy egg rolls or sweet and sour chicken, South China is usually the first name that pops up. For over a decade, this diner has quietly built a loyal following. Its unassuming storefront might be easy to miss, but inside, the food tells a much louder story.

What makes South China stand out is the balance between classic recipes and generous portions. From sizzling General Tso's chicken to their much-loved lo mein noodles, every dish feels like a warm, familiar hug. Many patrons who grew up in the area recall birthday dinners or casual family lunches spent around these very tables.

A good friend of mine who works nearby swears by their lunch specials. “You can’t beat the price or the portions,” he told me, showing off his overflowing combo plate of sesame chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoon. I tried it for myself — the chicken had a crispy shell with just the right amount of tangy sauce, and the rice was fluffy with bits of green onion and egg folded in.

Exploring the menu beyond the takeout classics

While South China certainly delivers on the crowd-pleasers, it’s worth digging deeper into the menu to discover their lesser-known treasures. For starters, their Moo Shu Pork served with warm pancakes and hoisin sauce is flavorful and layered with texture — crunchy cabbage, tender pork, and just the right hint of garlic.

Then there's the Egg Foo Young, a dish not as commonly found in today’s fast-casual Chinese eateries. Here, it comes in golden-brown patties smothered in a rich brown gravy that tastes like something out of a home kitchen rather than a diner.

Vegetarian diners aren’t left out either. The broccoli with garlic sauce is deeply savory, and their tofu stir-fry offers a crisp-edged tofu that soaks up every bit of soy and ginger in the wok.

If you're visiting for the first time, ask the staff about their daily specials — many aren’t on the printed menu. One day, you might get lucky with a batch of freshly made dumplings, tender and juicy, bursting with chive and pork.

What locals are saying and why reviews matter

People in Kalamazoo don’t hold back when it comes to food opinions, and that’s a good thing. The reviews for South China on various platforms tell a story of consistent food and even more consistent service. On Yelp and Google, you'll see mentions of how fast the food comes out, how hot it is when it arrives, and how the staff always greets you like you're a regular — even if it’s your first time.

One reviewer noted, “This is the spot you come back to after trying all the fancy places.” And honestly, that feels true. There's comfort in knowing exactly what to expect — a friendly face, a warm booth, and a plate of steaming fried rice.

The dining area itself is simple, nothing over the top, but it’s always clean. The kitchen is partially visible from the front, adding to the transparency that customers appreciate. And the takeout process? Fast, efficient, and always accurate.

How South China fits into Kalamazoo’s food scene

With so many new restaurants popping up around town, it’s easy for long-standing spots to get overshadowed. But places like South China don’t need gimmicks or Instagram walls to stay relevant — they thrive on consistency, flavor, and community trust.

Kalamazoo's food landscape is diverse, with everything from sushi bars to farm-to-table cafés. Yet, South China holds its ground because it delivers something timeless. It’s not just about “Asian food” — it’s about food that feels good to eat. Dishes like their beef with broccoli, hot and sour soup, or sweet and spicy orange chicken remind diners why they keep coming back.

The location itself is also part of the charm. 811 Riverview Dr might not be the busiest stretch in town, but it's convenient enough for lunch breaks and close enough for neighborhood families to drop in after work.

What South China represents isn’t just a place to eat — it’s part of Kalamazoo’s culinary DNA. A spot where food isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, just perfecting what it already does well.

If you're in the area and craving that perfect blend of savory, sweet, and crispy, South China is where you want to be. No frills, just good food, fast service, and a flavor profile that hits the spot every time.
